[BINDING - VICTORIAN]. HUMPHREYS, Henry Noel (1810-1879). A Record of a Black Prince. London: Longman, Green, Brown, & Longman, 1849.
8vo (184 x 127 mm). Title printed in red and black, numerous chromolithographic illuminated pages. (Very light marginal toning.) Morocco-backed papier-mâché boards, all edges gilt (rebacked one corner cracked, evidence of restoration); modern slipcase.
A Record of the Black Prince was one of the most successful of all the gift or table books printed during the Victorian era, with its elaborate binding considered to be the best of its kind produced largely due to its thick binding designed to show off the crimson paper beneath. McLean, Victorian Books, p.104.
